What is a cesspool?

A cesspool is an underground pit that collects raw, untreated household wastewater and lets it seep directly into the surrounding soil and groundwater. There is no treatment — solids settle, liquids leach out. On Kauaʻi, where lava-influenced soils, high water tables, and proximity to the ocean and streams are common, cesspools can pollute drinking water aquifers and damage nearshore reefs.

What is cesspool conversion?

Conversion replaces your existing cesspool with a Hawaiʻi DOH-permitted Individual Wastewater System (IWS) — typically a septic tank or an aerobic treatment unit (ATU) — and properly decommissions the old cesspool. The result is a system that actually treats wastewater before it returns to the ground.

Is conversion really mandatory?

Yes. Hawaiʻi state law requires every cesspool to be upgraded, converted, or connected to a sewer by January 1, 2050. Some properties may need to act earlier based on system failure, pumping or spill history, permit activity, building or use changes, or specific discharge conditions. The Department of Health publishes a Cesspool Prioritization Map and issues compliance orders where conditions warrant.

Do you handle the entire conversion in-house?

Yes. One local crew handles site evaluation, engineering coordination, DOH and County permitting, excavation, septic or ATU installation, cesspool decommissioning, final inspection, and yard restoration. You are not juggling three separate contractors.

Do you do work other than cesspool conversions?

Yes. We are a full excavation company — land clearing, grading, foundation prep, trenching, drainage, and driveway prep. We also run two zero-turn mowers for large-property mowing, brush knockdown, and ongoing yard care, including vacation rental upkeep.

What's the difference between a septic system and an ATU?

Accepted Answer

A septic system uses a tank plus a leach field to treat wastewater passively — lower cost, lower maintenance, but it needs adequate space and the right soil. An ATU (aerobic treatment unit) injects air to treat wastewater more aggressively — required for tighter lots, sensitive areas, or sites that cannot support a leach field. We recommend the right system after the site evaluation.

Who handles the permits?

We do. That includes the DOH Wastewater Branch IWS permit, County of Kauaʻi building and grading permits, and — when applicable — Special Management Area (SMA) coordination with the County of Kauaʻi Planning Department.

What if my property is inside the SMA?

Accepted Answer

Most coastal Kauaʻi properties are. SMA review adds time and paperwork but it is routine for us. We prepare the application, coordinate with Planning, and keep it moving while you live your life.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

Missed deadlines can trigger DOH compliance orders, daily fines, and forced upgrade timelines that put you at the back of every contractor's queue. Properties also become harder to sell, finance, or insure once they are flagged as out of compliance.

Do you maintain the system after installation?

We can. Septic tanks need pumping every 3–5 years and ATUs need scheduled service. We offer maintenance plans and will remind you when service is due.

Is your work warrantied?

Yes. Our installation workmanship is warrantied, and the tank and ATU equipment carries the manufacturer warranty. We document everything for your records and the County.
