Planning urgency categories near Poʻipū
The Hawaiʻi Department of Health groups cesspools into planning urgency categories based on proximity to drinking water, streams, the coastline, and sensitive ecosystems. These categories help homeowners and agencies decide where to convert first. They are not legal deadlines for individual properties.
A planning urgency category (not a legal deadline). These systems are generally closest to drinking-water sources, streams, wetlands, or the coastline, so the Hawaiʻi DOH prioritization tool flags them to plan first.
The only enacted statewide cesspool deadline under Act 125 and HRS 342D-72 is January 1, 2050. Priority 1 and Priority 2 are planning urgency categories, not legal deadlines or property-specific determinations. For your parcel's category, consult the Hawaiʻi Cesspool Prioritization Tool or the DOH Wastewater Branch.
